Opening Keynote: In Conversation with Imani Erriu

The day will open with a live conversation and Q&A with author Imani Erriu. Erriu is the author of the romance fantasy series Heavenly Bodies. She is a graduate from the Manchester Metropolitan University where she received a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. She spent most of her childhood in the forests of the English countryside, which definitely gifted her an overactive imagination. When she isn't crying over her own fictional characters or daydreaming up her next plot twist, she can be found eating pasta and watching "The Office" on repeat.

Thanks to the generosity of Penguin Random House Canada, attendees will have the opportunity to enter to win a copy of Heavenly Bodies when they attend this session!

Block 2: Manga Crash Course

Manga may not be a genre, but it does have its own unique categories within the format that are essential to understand for successful readers’ advisory conversations. Join Dan Patterson, graphic novel specialist at Library Bound, for an introduction to the format and learn about current trends, classic series and tips on finding titles for different age groups.

Dan Patterson

Library Bound

Born and raised in London, ON, it was there that Dan’s relationship with comics began, as he tagged along with his older brother to the long since defunct Bid Time Return Comics. An interest in manga and anime followed in high school, which really took off when he headed off to Wilfrid Laurier University for his undergrad. After getting his History degree, Dan pursued a Masters of Library and Information Science program at UWO.

Dan joined Library Bound in 2004. After working in cataloguing for the first ten years, Dan took on management of graphic novel ARPs, due to his long history of reading them. Initially a one-day-a-week job, it has quickly grown to the point that Dan now works as LBI’s resident graphic novel selector full time.

Block 2: Decoding Mysteries

This presentation explores mystery and thriller genre tropes, subgenres, and current trends, along with strategies for guiding readers transitioning between genres. It’s rumored Hannah Mary still has a softer side because she also writes holiday romantic comedies as Holly Cassidy, the second of which was THE CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN.
